With many family practice teams across the province adopting electronic medical records (EMR) in family practices, some concerns related to how the system records nursing documentation have come to the forefront. Family practice nurses (FPN) have expressed concern that the EMR records documentation in such a manner that it might appear that the FPN has prescribed a drug or made a diagnosis. The reason for this is that in some EMRs the FPN’s name is attached to these activities. This has resulted in some nurses feeling uncomfortable in documenting the diagnosis or printing the prescription. In these highly collaborative team practices, this can have an impact on patient care, efficiency, and productivity.

In response to this concern, key stakeholders from the Department of Health and Wellness (including PHIM) were consulted about the best approach.

In October, 2007, the Family Practice nurses professional practice council was established with the assistance of an "Improving nursing practice grant" from Capital Health. With the leadership of an energetic group of family practice nurses from diverse practices (Health centres, academic centres and fee for service practices) much has been accomplished.

Over the past 3 years, the group has been working on defining the need for medical directives and developing these medical directives to be shared with nurses from around the province. These directives will provide a valuable resource for nurses working in family practice. These are available through this website and will also be included in the Canadian Nurses Association online Toolkit for nurses in family practice.

Currently the group is working on defining practice around INR management and insulin adjustment. The committee has worked closely with the College of Registered Nurses (CRNNS) and would like to thank Anne Fraser for her support and expertise.

Current members are:

Daralynn MacLean - chair
Carol Todd
Tracey Longley
Jane Vallee
Trish MacEachern
Corrine Hodder-Malloy
Denise Penny
Tammy Roode
Patsy Smith
Sharon Lawlor
Nancy MacNeil

The Family Practice Nurses of Nova Scotia held their 3rd Annual Education Day and AGM titled "Harvest Time" October 17th, 2009 at the Holiday Inn in Truro N.S. Over 35 nurses from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario were in attendance.

Topics featured included Infection Control, Pandemic Planning, Depression and Holistic Approaches to Menopause. A panel discussion featuring experts on Pandemic Planning, and the implementation of the H1N1 immunization program for Nova Scotia was a highlight of the day, and could not have come at a better time!

The AGM ushered in a new executive for the term of 2009-2011, who are eager to get to work planning next year’s event. Their contact information is posted on this website and please feel free to pass on your questions, suggestions and comments.

Special thanks to our industry partners and sponsors for the day. We could not have achieved this successful event without you. See you all in October 2010 - date TBA!

It's not hard to find something to complain about in our health care system. Many people have no family doctor, for instance. And those who do often have trouble getting in to see them when they need to. A problem made worse by the panic over swine flu. This week on White Coat, Black Art, we look at some innovative steps taken by GP's to give quicker, and better, care. Nurses in family practice? Max loading? Group visitations, anyone?

It is time for us to celebrate as our association has reached an exciting milestone.

As many of you will remember, it was 2 years ago this June that a small group of dedicated family practice nurses gathered together in Truro, NS to establish the FPNANS. What a tremendous 2 years it has been!

We have 30 members to date this year with hopes that many more nurses will join. So much has been accomplished provincially and the momentum is growing nationally. The national Canadian Family Practice Nurses Association now has reached 100 members strong and other provinces like Manitoba and Alberta are beginning to organize and establish provincial family practice nursing associations....
