Medical Directives

The following work is a collaborative venture on behalf of the Family Practice Nurse Professional Practice Council in Capital District Health Authority (CDHA). The work on this project has been funded by a grant from Capital Health 2007-08 Improving Nursing Practice Grants with the purpose to develop Medical Directives (MDs).

These tools have been developed to support Registered Nurses practicing in primary care and may be adapted for their individual practice settings.

Based on an identified need for Medical Directives in family practices settings, we are providing the attached document(s), Medical Directives for Family Practice Nurses which have been developed for use within primary care settings. Use of this information should be carefully assessed prior to implementation. It was developed as a resource by the Capital District Family Practice Nurse Professional Practice Council and may not be suitable for your practice setting. Guiding Principles:

  1. Each individual practice should familiarize themselves with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS) document Guidelines for Delegated Medical Functions & Medical Directives. This document is available on the CRNNS website at www.crnns.ca.

  2. In accordance with the Guidelines for Delegated Medical Functions and Medical Directives document, any new MDs must be approved and signed. The process for approval varies according to individual settings, and can be granted by a committee and/ or a physician and Registered Nurse in an individual practice.

  3. It is the responsibility of the practice to ensure that the care being provided meets the highest safety standards.

  4. In accordance with CRNNS each Registered Nurse is responsible to submit a copy of new MDs, as well as, a report of new and revised MDs (Appendix D) to the Chair, Scope of Practice Committee CRNNS for their records. The MDs available through this web site have been previously reviewed by Scope of Practice Committee CRNNS. If used without changing the content then you need only submit a list (Appendix D). All MDs need to be reviewed, updated and signed on a "regular" basis. All previous practice policies should be retained by the practices.

  5. The following MDs have been developed by the Family Practice Nurse Professional Practice Council are to be assessed and revisions made as required to support FPNs in their specific clinical settings:

    5.1 Suture/Staple Removal

    5.2 Bloodwork/Laboratory Ordering & Obtaining Specimens

    5.3 Influenza Vaccine
