Welcome to the FPNANS Website
|

In June 2007, a group of dedicated Family Practice Nurses across Nova Scotia came together to formalize the existing interest group into an established association. We recognize that the majority of Family Practice Nurses work in isolation and have limited opportunities and resources to support their practice needs.

Our mission is to advance Family Practice Nursing in Nova Scotia through collaborative networks and support systems and by promoting our vision and standard of care.

Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses working in the family practice setting are an asset to our primary care system and deserve support. FPNANS Membership benefits include networking forums, education opportunities and a united voice for Family Practice Nurse initiatives. Let's work together to get there!

This website has been brought to you by a generous donation from
the Family Practice Nurse Professional Council through the
Improving Nursing Practice Grant, Capital Health, Nova Scotia and
Family Practice Nurses Association of Nova Scotia.

With many family practice teams across the province adopting electronic medical records (EMR) in family practices, some concerns related to how the system records nursing documentation have come to the forefront. Family practice nurses (FPN) have expressed concern that the EMR records documentation in such a manner that it might appear that the FPN has prescribed a drug or made a diagnosis. The reason for this is that in some EMRs the FPN’s name is attached to these activities. This has resulted in some nurses feeling uncomfortable in documenting the diagnosis or printing the prescription. In these highly collaborative team practices, this can have an impact on patient care, efficiency, and productivity.

In response to this concern, key stakeholders from the Department of Health and Wellness (including PHIM) were consulted about the best approach.

ANGELA MOMBOURQUETTE - Mon. May 10

DARALYNN MACLEAN is a nurse with a mission.

That mission is to spread the word about the valuable contribution family practice nurses make to health care (provincial bureaucrats, are you listening?) and since this is National Nursing Week, I'm going to help her do just that.

MARCH 2010 - PEER-REVIEWED FEATURE

The authors developed a survey as part of a study to explore the role of nurses employed in Canadian family practice residency training programs, which provide physicians with two years of additional training after they have completed undergraduate medical education. Licensed practical nurses, registered nurses and nurse practitioners employed at residency training program sites have a unique opportunity to educate new physicians about nursing scopes of practice and about how to work effectively with nurses.
