Family Practice Nurses Association of Nova Scotia - About FPNANS
The Beginnings of the FPNANS

In the early 1980's, a small interest group of family practice nurses from across Nova Scotia gathered to share educational sessions and networking opportunities. Unfortunately, the group gradually dissolved as a result of distance, limited financial resources, lay offs and lack of support for family practice nursing.

In 2003, there was a renewed interest in the family practice nursing support after 3 family practice nurses from Halifax, attended the Ontario Family Practice Nursing Conference. These 3 nurses (Carol Todd, Marilyn Howlett, and Mary MacKay), discovered that the Ontario Family Practice Nurses Interest Group had over 500 members. They eagerly returned home to set out on a journey to learn about the state of Family Practice Nursing in Nova Scotia with the vision of one day having a formal family practice nursing group established in Nova Scotia.

The following events will highlight the important steps that led to the beginning of the Family Practice Nurses Association of Nova Scotia, many of the members of which were the Registered Nurses who pioneered the interest group in the 1980's.
  • 2004 - Received grant from Nova Scotia Dept. of Health Nursing Strategy Program to conduct research on "The Current Role of Family Practice/Primary Health Care Nurses in Nova Scotia".

  • February 2004 - Strategic Planning day - Halifax, NS.

  • October, 2006 - "Harvest Time Conference - Advancing Roles Through Shared Discovery" hosted in Halifax by FPN Interest Group.

  • November 2006 - Provincial Family Practice Nurse Round Table Discussion.

  • March 2007 - Nursing in Your Family Practice Program. First Family Practice Nurse Education pilot launched through Capital District Health Authority & Registered Nurses Professional Development Centre with leadership from Patsy Smith, MN, RN.

  • June 2007 - "The Role of Family Practice/Primary Health Care Nurses in NS", Carol Todd RN, Marilyn Howlett RN, Mary MacKay RN, Beverly Lawson MSc, published in the Canadian Nurses Journal.

  • June 2007 - Inaugural Meeting of the Family Practice Nurses Association of Nova Scotia (FPNANS) held in Truro Nova Scotia. This is the 2nd Family Practice Nurses Association to be established in Canada.

  • October 2008 - First Annual General Meeting and 2nd "Harvest Time Conference" for the Family Practice Nurses Association of Nova Scotia, Halifax (33 members).
